The new IDSpiral Geodesic Dome - a fascinating piece of engineering and innovation
Created by our very own team of talented minds (including Billy Tantric, Sam Skey from S4 engineering, Dan Spencer and Dom Spiral amongst many others) this structure is a proof for how feasable it is to make dreams come true.
The idea for such a sophisticated concept was born in the late autumn 2004 but the dome itself was built in less then 4 weeks, a record breaking time frame for such a demanding idea. In fact the first ever build was on site at the Glastonbury Festival where we we also cut all the prototypes for the covering panels.
In total the frame consists of 740 metal struts, held together by 350 bolts and covered by 420 PVC panels, using more than 2000 washers and nuts...
the result is nothing less than a truly stunning and totally unique structure...
due to its intricate build the effect of being inside the dome is rather amazing
and with its 14 meter diameter it allows for a sizeable stage installation
the clear panels make up for some intriguing reflections
and the lighting effect at night is simply breathtaking
as is the interior
tested by chartered engineers the structure is incredibly strong and has seen more than 10 of us climing the frame at the same time
we have only just begun experimenting with the possible applications for this structure but there are countless creative and practical ideas in the making.
